This writing class will explore our loves, losses, and longings through the lenses of the many selves that take on storyteller roles. Pulling from everyday moments as well as transcendent ones, both experienced writers and those new to journaling will pull from the discipline of fiction-writing to give shape to the voices of the child, the old woman, the rebel, and others—and to recognize when we are one versus the other. It is a context that accounts for both our most clumsy, and our most free, loving, and pivotal moments. We write in order to get acquainted with the characters who inhabit and compel us, and to give them a chance to speak.
Through a series of prompts, you will begin a practice of changing the mind by changing the voice. The conclusion of the class will be the beginning of a body of work and an ongoing practice of compassionate creativity.
What to bring: Bring whatever you prefer to write with—either a laptop or paper. If you write with paper, invest in a beautiful pen and a new, fresh, empty book.
